Yale Brings Something Extra to APH

“Don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” “Be your authentic self.” “My closest friends are still the girls from my all girls high school.” “Take advantage of this experience.” These messages as well as the inspiring sounds of Yale’s premier all female a cappella group, Something Extra, filled our halls and Bistro this week. These educated, enlightened and empowered women shared their advice as well as performed for our students, faculty and staff.

Students at The Academy at Penguin Hall relished the special visit of Something Extra on January 11th. This group of thirteen women performed a dynamic selection of songs for our students, including a cover of “No Place I’d Rather Be.” Yale’s Something Extra has toured throughout North America, Europe, and the Caribbean, performing at venues including the White House. Students, staff, and faculty were thrilled to experience the sounds of Something Extra. Following their spectacular performance, a time of question and answer ensued.

While all members of the group currently attend Yale University, they come from various parts of the country. One member even mentioned that she attended an all-girls high school much like APH, and that her friends from high school are still her closest friends. With a very robust performing arts and musical program here at APH, our students who participate in our a cappella group, musical ensembles, and Drama Club were particularly inspired by the group’s performance. Something Extra joined our students and faculty for lunch following their presentation, continuing their conversations about music, college preparation, and much more.
